about

WOMAN OF THE LAND: Inspired by the life of Beryl Tacon, a former resident of Wirksworth, Derbyshire. Beryl’s moving story focused on her gratitude at her belief she was gifted an extra 10 healthy years in her 80s allowing her the chance to watch the unfurling lives of her teenage grandchildren - she had missed much of the decade of her own children’s teenage years due to severe mental illness. Despite many barriers, Beryl trained to become the Ministry of Agriculture’s adviser to South Norfolk for 10 years from 1947. In 1957 she had to resign as married women were not employed by the ministry. Beryl’s eyes shone as she talked about her work on the land and gaining the trust of the farming community she served. Beryl’s daughter Christine has received the CBE for services to Agriculture and her young granddaughter was on the cusp of deciding about post graduate agricultural studies as this song was conceived.

lyrics

WOMAN OF THE LAND by Carol Fieldhouse

A Woman of the land, a furrow seldom ploughed
A foot in closing doors, close to the ground

The Land made me,
Rivers in my veins
The cuckoo’s call on a summer’s day
The cackling jackdaw

Frill and fancy don’t detain me
With the herd I made my bed
4 a.m. the soft lowing
Of the earthy milk shed

A Woman of the land, a furrow seldom ploughed
A foot in closing doors, close to the ground

Soil seeps in my blood, as Norfolk sky is wide
A daughter drawn to serve the Land as I

Three score years and ten
Grandchildren detain me
A daughter’s daughter questioning,
Is farming for her?

Teenage years lost
Lost but not forgotten
The chance to live once more
In the shelter of them

These Women of the land, a furrow seldom ploughed
A foot in closing doors, close to the ground
These Women of the land, furrows seldom ploughed
A foot in closing doors, years lost and found

The Land made me
